NGA and Planet Sign Five-Year Research Agreement on Analytics
Both the private and public sectors are heavily investing in ways to transform geospatial data into analytic insights for the commercial and government sectors. Planet is a part of this effort, and is happy to announce it has signed a five-year cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) to explore analytic solutions for extracting vital insights from daily global satellite imagery.
As part of the agreement, Planet will provide NGA early access to analytics for the purpose of understanding how these information feeds can be integrated into the agency’s workflows. Planet’s analytics have the potential to create efficiencies and offer alerts to point NGA analysts to relevant change on Earth, supporting NGA’s role across the Department of Defense (DOD) and the US intelligence community at large.
“This agreement is a model for an innovative partnership between the USG and industry to explore the utility of commercial geospatial analytics. NGA is the expert in geospatial analysis with decades of data, processing, and analysis. By partnering with Planet, they get access to foundational analytics that could transform their workflow and coupled with their data can extract early indicators and warnings to better respond and allocate their high value assets,” said Robbie Schingler, Chief Strategy Officer and co-founder of Planet. “We’re honored to have the opportunity to collaborate with NGA in this work.”
“The Planet CRADA will help to fully inform NGA on the quality and utility of the services that Planet is able to develop and provide using their high-frequency imagery stacks,” said Manuela McCabe, NGA’s CRADA program manager.
NGA has been a customer of Planet’s since 2016, when the agency first subscribed to Planet’s imagery feed. With this cooperative research and development agreement, we’re excited to explore new possibilities at the frontier of imagery analytics.
